Plans did change as a welcoming image was played during Ohtani’s warmup, along with a standing ovation by a good amount of Angel’s fans during his first at bat. A video and walk up song was not provided by the Angels for his first at bat. MLB fans were quite disappointed for the lack of enthusiam for the Japanese superstar’s return.
The two-way player returns after signing his 700 million dollar contract with the Dodgers this past offseason. After winning two MVP’s for the baseball club, the reception was mixed with boos and cheers for the All-Star. Although the experience was quite confusing for baseball fans, it did not affect the outcome with the Dodgers winning 6-2.
Ohtani provided a boost of international stardom to the Los Angeles Angels with Japanese ads all over the ballpark during his time there. Now roles have reversed, with Dodger Stadium being sponsored by multiple Japanese based companies. Ohtani is now expected to make his first ever playoff at-bat this season, after spending 7 years in the MLB. With the support of other superstars around him, Shohei will be chasing the first ever 50/50 season in September, with every at bat being watched by the world.
